The 10 Greatest Albums Ever (Part 1)

Any list of what the greatest of anything is constantly changes and should be re-evaluated. But here, as of this moment in 2009, are the greatest albums. In no order, and not including live albums or "best of's".

1) Astral Weeks- Van Morrison (1968) (Cyprus Avenue and Madame George. Both are off this album. The first is an eternity's worth of suffering before the gates of heaven, and the second is a hardening of the heart so your heart won't die. But somethings changed forever, "say goodbye, goodbye, goodbye, goodbye")

2) Let It Bleed- The Rolling Stones (1969) (Sex and drugs is heroin and fucking. "Midnight Rambler" is Mick as a serial killing rapist, "Let It Bleed" is him shooting heroin in his arms and legs and at the same time telling the guy or girl he's fucking that "you can cum all over me". And amid a sea of failing junkies, as the ship sinks down forever, he sings"You Can’t Always Get What you Want" as a sincere and loving farewell to the sixties).

3) The White Album- The Beatles (1968)- Most double albums aren’t good, and the ones that are good aren’t as good as this one. John has the best songs, (as always), but McCartney is awesome on Helter Skelter and even his lightweight songs sound cool between the fucked up wailing in "Yer Blues" and "I'm So Tired". There's a dark, erie, quality to this album, as if even the upbeat songs were written between walls smeared with blood. Charles Manson heard the album as a prophecy of the end of days. The Manson Family cult and his murder charges have obscured the fact that he was the most perceptive listener that this album has ever had. The final song is called "Good Night" and Ringo sings it beautifully as four figures make their way up to Sharon Tate's house)

4)Tonight’s the Night- Neil Young (1975) ("He tried to do his best, but he could not". One of my favorite albums ever, a rough, sloppy, out of tune prayer for an overdosed guitarist. A decimated Crazy Horse and a barely standing Neil Young raise up his ghost to haunt them home forever)
